A MESSAGE FROM CLEAN PB
Accordion Fold Brochure
Do not throw this opportunity away
CLEAN PB will NOT distribute these brochures in mass mailings, or leave them in piles at local stores and coffee shops. Instead, groups of volunteers and Town Council members themselves, will personally knock on doors to reach out to visitors and residents in PB's neighborhoods and at local events and gatherings.
This brochure is more than just an introduction to CLEAN PB. It is the CLEAN PB rallying cry – speak up, clean up, and don't give up. It invites people to join our grassroots effort and get involved in CLEAN PB community actions and events. It's about neighbor reaching out to neighbor – an opportunity for face to face interaction, one individual at a time. Hand Delivering these brochures adds a personal touch that jump starts the conversation and gets people thinking and talking about the litter problem in Pacific Beach.

BROTHER CAN YOU SPARE SOME TRASH?

The next time you take a walk down Garnet Avenue in Pacific Beach, you better be prepared for a little trash talk. CLEAN PB is provoking pedestrians with a series of trash talking signs posted on the sides of outdoor trash receptacles.
These are not the typical "green" messages that you might expect from a broad based anti-litter campaign. The goal was to craft messages that target the source of the litter problem, which turns out to be mostly young males ages 18 to 24 who like to hang out in PB, eat fast food, smoke cigarettes, drink beer and litter.

For this particular demographic, weird is cool – and we think taking trash cans are weird. In order to capture their attention it was essential that the signs appeal to our audiences sarcastic sense of humor. So we basically hijacked a few common phrases and repurposed them for these unexpected trash can messages. Out of context, these phrases seem to have little or nothing to do with litter reduction, but when posted on trash cans, the subtle messages come through crystal clear.
The concentration of nightclubs and other youth orientated businesses in PB is a significant draw for this high spirited and fun loving demographic. So CLEAN PB created trash talking trash cans and set them loose in these litter prone areas to harass pedestrians, provoke conversation, and create moments of reflection along the streets of PB.

LOST INNOCENCE

Litter has become invisible. It has become a part of the landscape of Pacific Beach that few people seem to pay attention to anymore. Unfortunately, ignoring empty containers on the sidewalk and dismissing litter as someone else's problem has become the norm. Taking an active interest in the condition of our streets and sidewalks is not a priority for most people. People care, but not enough to do anything about it.
CLEAN PB is not here to come down on you, we just want to remind everyone that litter is simply lost trash – trash that belongs somewhere. The found posters are a humorous way to get our audience to think about litter and perhaps encourage a reassessment of their attitudes towards it, and hopefully inspire them to join in the effort at CLEANPB.com.

TRASHED IN PB

The idea behind these coasters is that having fun and reducing litter are not mutually exclusive. These coasters being distributed to local bars and restaurants in PB, are basically conversation pieces for drinkers.
The phrases printed on them are designed to fit seamlessly into the typical bar conversation at any given time. They can function as anything from random declarations to cheeky ice breakers, or when passed under the table at an opportune moment, can be grounds for a martini in the face. Regardless of how they are used, what sticks to the bottom of the glass all night is the underlaying message that in Pacific Beach, littering is for losers who don't go out drinking.
On the back is our "everything is connected" trash puzzle. This series of nine trash laden sidewalk squares have a printed pattern that when placed together can be repeated infinitely – kind of like what we see happening on the sidewalk outside. Those who discover this fun little game get the added bonus of trying to connect their trash to other peoples trash, while watching how quickly one small square of trash can turn into one great big pile of litter.

Let's talk trash
Discourse is a catalyst for change, it tends to create what is discussed. Our goal is to instigate an anti-litter cultural movement by getting the people in Pacific Beach to begin talking to each other about litter.

Almost everyone in Pacific Beach agrees that something needs to be done to solve the litter problem, but few of us believe that anything we do will actually work. People are carelessly throwing their trash on the sidewalk because they think that it doesn't matter. People are discouraged and unwilling to invest their time and energy in an effort that they believe is doomed to fail. Unfortunately when it comes to litter in Pacific Beach, ignoring the problem has become the problem.

Talking trash is our way of pointing to the elephant in the room and saying "awesome tusks dude." It's a great way to call someone out for littering without getting punched out. It's also a nice way to start a conversation about the litter problem, and spread the word about CLEAN PB. The more people engaged and discussing the litter problem, the more credibility and momentum the movement builds, and the bigger the pool of ideas for creating solutions. Talking trash is a springboard to real change within the community.
Talking trash is simply "talking about trash." Whether you're complaining or constructively engaged, your voice counts. Working together, increasing litter awareness and education, and strengthening community pride under the banner of CLEAN PB will help Pacific Beach take back their streets and sidewalks from the steady tide of litter. With a little help from our friends and neighbors, we can make Pacific Beach the place everyone can go to enjoy some good clean fun.
